How much do life insurance leads cost in 2026?

Every price below comes from a public, linked source, and every rate we use in the math is labeled as an example. Use it to price a lead source in cost per sale, not cost per lead, before you spend a dollar.
Short answer

How much do life insurance leads cost?

In 2026, life insurance leads cost from about $0.25 to over $200 each. Aged leads run $0.25 to $4.50, shared real-time web leads about $20 to $45, exclusive web leads $50 to $150, fresh direct-mail mortgage protection leads $25 to $60, and live transfers $80 to $200 or more per call. Compare sources on cost per sale: price per lead divided by contact rate × appointment rate × close rate.

What does each type of life insurance lead cost?

Ranges are the published list prices we found for 2025 and 2026. Vendors discount for volume and charge more for narrow targeting, so treat each range as a starting point for a quote.

Why do lead prices range from 25 cents to $200?

Four things set the price of a lead, and every one of them shows up later in your close rate.

  • How many agents get it. A shared lead is sold to several buyers, so each pays a fraction of what it cost to generate. Final expense shared leads are commonly sold three to eight times according to Elevarus.
  • How old it is. The same aged lead drops from $4.50 in its first month to $0.25 after three months at the volume tiers on the Aged Lead Store price table.
  • Whether the person raised their hand. A form fill or a mailed reply card carries stated interest. A data lead built from public records does not, which is why it costs a fraction as much.
  • How it reaches you. A live transfer puts a person on your line right now, so you pay for the call center's dialing time too.

The math behind a $50 direct-mail lead

Direct mail shows why fresh exclusive leads can't be sold cheaply. David Duford reported $650 to $690 to drop 1,000 mortgage protection mailers at a 1% to 1.5% response rate. That is 10 to 15 reply cards per thousand pieces, or $43 to $69 per returned card before the vendor adds a margin. A fresh exclusive mail lead priced well under $40 has usually been shared, resold or aged somewhere along the way.

The same logic explains weekly-budget programs. Insurance Marketing Hub estimates that $250 to $300 a week buys 3 to 10 exclusive mortgage protection leads, which works out to roughly $25 to $100 per lead and $1,000 to $1,300 a month before you see your first reply.

How do you calculate cost per sale?

Cost per lead tells you what you spent. Cost per sale tells you whether it worked. The formula takes three rates you can track in any CRM:

Cost per sale = price per lead ÷ (contact rate × appointment rate × close rate)

Worked example: an exclusive web lead at $65, with a 55% contact rate, a 40% appointment rate and a 35% close rate, turns 7.7% of leads into sales. You need about 13 leads per sale, so lead cost per sale is about $844. Those rates sit inside the 7% to 14% close-per-lead planning band InsureLeads publishes for exclusive web leads.

For a wider view, ActiveProspect estimates that total acquisition cost per life insurance client can reach $2,000 to $3,000 once follow-up and conversion are counted. Lead cost is only part of it.

Example assumptions, not measured results from Leadality or any vendor. Prices come from the table above. Rates were set to land inside or below published planning bands (InsureLeads close bands of 2% to 5% aged, 7% to 14% exclusive web, 15% to 25% live transfer; Elevarus contact bands of 25% to 40% shared and 50% to 65% exclusive). Data lead rates are deliberately lower because the homeowner never asked to be contacted. Time assumes 40 manual dials an hour valued at $40.

What does your dialing time add to the cost?

The last column is the one most price guides skip. Cheap leads move the cost from your card to your calendar. In the example above, an aged lead costs about $83 in leads per sale but needs about 267 dials. A public-record data lead costs about $127 in leads per sale at the Growth plan price and needs about 427 dials, because nobody on that list asked to hear from you. A direct-mail lead flips it: about $505 in leads, only 29 dials.

Price your hour honestly. If you have open afternoons and a phone, low-price leads plus your time can be the best value on the board. If you already have appointments to run, a higher price per lead that saves you 10 hours a sale can be the better buy. That trade is the whole decision, and it is different for every agent.

What can you buy with $50, $300 or $1,000 a month?

Same example rates as above, applied to real budgets. Expected sales below 1 means you should not expect a sale every month at that spend.

$50 a month: buy reps, not a forecast

At $50 you can test a lead source or practice your opener, but no format reliably produces a sale every month. Two shared web leads barely register. Fifty exclusive data leads or about 40 aged leads give you enough dials to learn your numbers. Track every call so the next budget decision rests on your own data.

$300 a month: volume or intent

This is where the choice gets real. 400 data leads or 240 aged leads give you the most expected sales on paper, and they also ask for 1,000 to 1,600 dials a month, which is 25 to 40 hours on the phone. Five direct-mail leads or four exclusive web leads ask for a few hours, and you should expect a sale every other month or so at these example rates.

$1,000 a month: build a blend

With $1,000 most producing agents mix sources: a cheap, high-volume list for open dialing blocks plus higher-intent leads for prime hours. For example, the Scale plan at $399 plus 13 direct-mail leads (about $689) comes to about $988 and works out to roughly 5.1 expected sales at the example rates, with mail leads filling your best calling windows.

Which hidden costs change the real price of a lead?

  • Bad numbers and credit policies. A $30 lead with a disconnected number is a $30 loss unless the vendor credits it. Read the replacement rule before you buy, not after.
  • Minimum orders and weekly budgets. Bulk tiers and weekly spend programs lower the price per lead and raise the cost of a fair test.
  • Resold exclusives. If a lead says it was never contacted and three agents called that morning, your close rate is paying for it.
  • Chargebacks and lapses. Advance commission comes back if the policy lapses early, so persistency belongs in your math. Track issued and paid policies, not just applications.
  • Tools and compliance. CRM seats, a phone line, National Do Not Call Registry access and your own time scrubbing lists are part of every lead's cost.

How do you lower your cost per sale?

Most of the gap between two agents buying the same leads is follow-up. Call fresh leads first, call at the right hours, and keep calling: the Lead Response Management study found most reps stop after four or five attempts and only about 45% of leads ever get reached. Log every disposition so you know your real contact and close rates by source.

Life insurance lead cost FAQ

How much do life insurance leads cost in 2026?

Published 2026 prices run from about $0.25 to over $200 per lead. Aged leads cost $0.25 to $4.50 depending on age and volume, shared real-time web leads about $20 to $45, exclusive web leads about $50 to $150, fresh direct-mail mortgage protection leads about $25 to $60, and live transfers about $80 to $200 or more per call.

Why do exclusive leads cost so much more than shared leads?

A shared lead is sold to several agents, so the vendor splits its cost of generating the lead across buyers. An exclusive lead carries the whole cost on one buyer. You pay more per lead, but you are the only agent calling, which usually means higher contact and close rates.

Are aged life insurance leads worth buying?

They can be, if you have the dialing hours. In our worked example, an aged lead at $1.25 with conservative rates costs about $83 in leads per sale, the lowest cash cost of any type, but needs about 267 dials per sale. Results swing widely with lead age, prior resales and your follow-up.

How much do mortgage protection leads cost?

Fresh exclusive direct-mail mortgage protection leads are published at roughly $25 to $60 each, resold or aged mail leads at $0.50 to $12, digital or social mortgage protection leads around $40 to $50, and raw new homeowner lists at 5 to 20 cents a record before any phone matching.

How much do life insurance live transfers cost?

Published prices run from about $55 to $95 per inbound final expense call up to $160 per call for interest-checked life transfers, with broader 2026 market estimates of $80 to $200 or more. Price depends on the buffer time, exclusivity and how much qualifying the call center does.

What is a good cost per sale for life insurance leads?

Judge it against what a sale pays you. At an example $1,200 annual premium and 80% first-year commission, a sale pays about $960 before chargebacks. A lead cost per sale near or above that loses money in year one, and lapses make it worse.

How many leads should I buy when testing a new vendor?

Buy enough to reach at least 25 to 30 real conversations before you judge the source. With a 25% contact rate that is about 100 to 120 leads. Smaller tests mostly measure luck, and a vendor that requires a large minimum order makes a fair test more expensive.
